@sciencefunn: Scientists have conducted several promising clinical trials showing that a single dose of psilocybin (the psychoactive compound in “magic mushrooms”), paired with therapy, can lead to long-lasting remission from depression, and there is preliminary evidence of benefit for cancer-related mental health. However, it’s not a proven cure-all, especially not for actual cancer remission or with guaranteed 99% success. What the Research Actually Shows 1. Depression Relief in Cancer Patients • A phase 2 clinical trial published in Cancer (June 2025) found that 28 patients with cancer and major depressive disorder who received one 25 mg dose of psilocybin with psychotherapy: • 53.6% had a significant reduction in depression two years later. • 50% achieved sustained remission at that same 2-year mark. • Earlier reports (Harvard, Dana-Farber) also noted that 80% showed response and 50% reached remission several months post-treatment. 2. Long-Term Effectiveness for Depression • A recent study presented at Psychedelic Science 2025 (Live Science) showed that one dose of psilocybin eased depression for at least five years in many patients with major depressive disorder. • Another trial (JAMA Oncology) reported 80% response and 50% remission rates in cancer patients treated for depression. Important Caveats: • These results are from small to moderate clinical studies, and effectiveness can vary based on the condition and patient group. • The 2-year remission claim refers to depression, not cancer remission. • Psilocybin therapy is still experimental and not yet widely approved outside of controlled clinical settings.
