I prefer to sign the back. The work should be appreciated for what it is and not who made it imo.

i hated it until I was searching for an artist whose name I've forgotten and I only had a screenshot of an artwork of them in my gallery. seeing the signature was like seeing the light lmaoo I was able to find them so easily with it, that permanently changed my opinion

I always try and make it subtle. Nothing looks more silly and detracts from the artwork than a giant signature

I prefer to put my signature, title, and date on the back of my pieces. All the info I need without getting distracted by the info

As an avid art collector, I always want a signature on the front, in a consistent fashion with the artist’s other works. I have a few pieces where the artist insisted on signing the back—and when I go to get these professionally framed, the framer always has to construct a custom cutout to keep the signature visible. It always looks so odd to me. I’d much rather see the signature line on the bottom front of the piece.

I've gone a different way. I used to sign it on the front but now sign it on the back and write a litte message of the materials used, varnish type etc. I dont want anything to break the immersion of the picture

so weird that so many artists don't like signing their artwork. I love signing my artwork but probably cuz it gives me a sense of completion. That's what I know it's completely done

I like to use my signature to accent one of the secondary colors. Like the blush on her cheek.

Completely agree with this! As an artist, I’ve always hated signing the front because I felt like it was distracting and drew attention away from the painting so I would just sign the back, but I’ve found people buying artwork will specifically request that you sign the front if it’s not there, so I’ve learned to start doing this now!

I used to hate signing the front on my work, only ever on the back. It’s only my latest body of work that I felt comfortable enough to put my name on the front, and my collectors are all so pleased with the visible signature now.

I also collect vintage art and prints and it's frustrating to never find the artist. some have official cards with them or adhered to the frame but most don't.
