It’s a contentious subject and in an ideal world everyone would be able to wear what they want. But as we know rightly or wrongly people do make judgements about how people dress at work and can be distracted by it. This is particularly the case for women unfortunately. I would always recommend approaching a conversation like this respectfully and honestly as shown in this video with a focus on the potential impact of the way they’re currently dressed. They may not be aware so avoid telling them off or shaming them. Instead use these 4 steps: 1️⃣ Forewarn them it could feel contentious. This shows empathy and thoughtfulness 2️⃣ Raise their awareness respectfully “As you are probably aware rightly or wrongly people make judgements about how we dress at work and can be distracted by what we’re wearing” 3️⃣ Explain the potential impact. Not wanting the way they’re dressed to distract from their talents/ skills/ expertise can be a good way to come at this 4️⃣ Ask before giving advice: “Would it be helpful to share more about what kind of clothing I’d recommend in this environment?” 📌 Please remember the advice offered in this video is generalised.
