basic signs at least I do wish they taught us a 2nd language starting in first grade like most countries.

You helped me realize why I enjoyed learning and using ASL! It is a much more consistently accessible communication method than spoke language for me.

you said it in your description: it's inclusive. our society prioritizes exclusivity. think about how elite colleges brag about the number of people NOT accepted. exclusivity creates this illusion of eliteness that borders on delusions of grandeur

I mean BSL and other signed languages for non-American English-speaking communities, but I basically agree with your overall point. A lot of US Americans I know have more proficiency in Spanish and French than they realize, and they should become just as proficient in ASL (or perhaps more in all three)

Please contact your local school boards and legislators. Advocate for teachers that are Deaf and HoH themselves to teach us their culture

It’s an unpopular opinion that not specifically ASL but the second language should be learned as soon as you enter preschool

Nonverbal, current deaf, our elders, having to take off my headphones at the grocery store. The world would benefit.

Chances are that many of us will experience hearing loss at some point in our life. This would be a game changer.

Yes! Because ASL is a language that could help so many people. If I wasn’t going blind I would learn it

I did take ASL in school, however I’ve never once had to use it irl. Honestly it depends on where you live because it’s most commonly used for deaf or hard of hearing individuals and usually they live in communities they’ve created. It’s like learning Korean and never traveling to Korea. Nearly pointless but cool to know
