I don’t think this is a good analogy. The core activity in your example is reading the book which is the same across amazon, Alexa, book store. If a computer engineer is outsourcing his code writing to GPT, that’s the core activity, he’s not really spending time on more important stuff

Also as a brain scientist: more brain activity/connectivity is NOT universally better. We know that untlcused time and doing easy tasks is actually critical to maintain our memory and attention.

Good roll-up. I read this paper too...and then argued with Claude about it. 🫠 My issue was that the assumption seemed to be that ALL mental struggle to write an essay (or anything else) is valuable for the human because there's more brain activity. There was little to no distinction between spending time (brain-only) and having the AI spend the time so the human could conduct higher-order tasks.

I used ChatGPT to take me through a tour of a palace in Europe bc we didn’t have a guide with us. I learned SO MUCH and was able to instantly dig deeper into the aspects/history/symbolism I was interested in. It was intellectually INVIGORATING 🎉

Stanford professors like this are going to ruin the world, as they are out there just hacking these AI products like they are going to save us, and all of these products are going to go away next week essentially, because they are like toddlers right now, compared to humans. These things were just born, and Harperdoes not do her homework. She just says whatever the script is that somebody pays her to do.
