Sunshine Reggae" by the Danish electronic/pop duo Laid Back (Tim Stahl and John Guldberg) was released in 1982 and became one of the biggest European summer anthems of 1983. In 1981, musicians Tim Stahl and John Guldberg used a government grant to set up their home studio in Denmark. Armed with early analog equipment—including a Roland TR-808 drum machine and sequential synthesizers—they began experimenting with blending electronic synth-pop with relaxed Jamaican reggae rhythms. The relaxed, laid-back vocal delivery ("Gimme, gimme, gimme just a little smile...") was recorded almost spontaneously to match the sun-drenched, unhurried vibe of the instrumental loop. When released internationally in 1983, label executives paired "Sunshine Reggae" with the track "White Horse" on the same vinyl single. While "Sunshine Reggae" took off instantly across Europe, US dance club DJs flipped the record over, turning "White Horse" into an influential track in the US electro and early hip-hop scenes Despite having virtually no traditional reggae roots, the track became an anthem across Europe, hitting #1 in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, eventually selling over 20 million copies worldwide.
