Evidence that you cannot bomb a country into democracy was the post reconstruction, southern former confederacy states. Things continued to be incredibly unjust because the efforts to institutionally improve them were canceled.

I'm not entirely convinced there was a metabolisation and acceptance of this guilt in enough of the society or for long enough period. maybe for a time but what I can see now is more symbolic and tokenistic and very liberal way of presenting and dealing with the history. even at dinner tables now the subject is awkward and avoided by many. we now that this guilt eats at Germany and is causing delusional decisions regarding the lastest Gcide that Germany is also a part of

We did this, not others, what we did was horrific, and we did it, not others, we will never do this again and we will not participate with others doing this again. And in the final step, which is needed, we will participate with others who seek to stop others doing this and similar things. I don’t know when the final step will happen but I know exactly where I don’t want to be when it happens.

Very important content again! And especially that last point, this will and can never be finished. That's something that has to be taught and lived. A democracy without democratic people won't live very long. So it's our duty to keep remembering and striving to be better - which sometimes feels hard and as if it doesn't work. But democracy isn't easy.

Not many country actually had a full reckoning and transformed itself as Germany had, Russia didn’t and look at them. Pity. Japan also didn’t go as far as Germany did, hence still affecting relations with China and Korea. Of course no country is perfect but this is a lesson here, country can indeed move forward if there were allowed a process to confront the ‘sins’ and then heal from it.

Can u say more about the public institutionalization of shame? Is it exclusively centered on never again hurting Jewish people? I am not quite understanding how this “shame” is not there in the same way with Gaza currently, minus the direct history. What exactly stands in the way of this morality being activated today in regard to descendants of victims of German atrocities doing the same to another people?

I don’t know how Germany did what’s it’s done. It’s remarkable. And then again when the wall came down. I would imagine that was a difficult reunion as well.
