Acute hydrocarbon toxicity most frequently affects the respiratory and central nervous systems. Inhalation or aspiration can cause chemical pneumonitis (lung inflammation), presenting with cough, shortness of breath, low oxygen levels, and potentially acute respiratory failure. This is particularly common in pediatric accidental ingestions and is a leading cause of poisoning mortality in children. Huffing, or the intentional inhalation of hydrocarbons and other volatile substances, carries significant health risks including death. Some one in my apartment building is using chemicals that cause headaches, shortness of breath, increased heartbeat. It is almost odorless but we can detect a faint gasoline smell. No one else can ever smell it but it is sickening. We have to leave windows open and fans on constantly. What can be done to stop this?
