@jess_happy_smallholding: Here’s a little update on my cut flower garden! I started to make this in October last year. This is how I made it: 🌱 I scraped the turf off to create my beds. This is because the field I’m growing in has a lot of brutish weeds like couch grass, mares tail and creeping buttercup. Scraping the top layer just removes some of the weed roots. You can also skip straight to the next step and lay cardboard straight onto the grass. From my experience in my own garden, this didn’t work so well and the weeds punched through the cardboard! 🌱 I laid out cardboard to exclude light from any weed seeds I uncovered, which inhibits and prevents growth. Laying cardboard directly onto grass suppresses the growth of grass and eventually kills it by excluding light. 🌱 I added a layer of compost 2-4 inches thick to improve the fertility of the soil and give me something to plant into. 🌱 I used woodchip to create the paths running between the beds. 🌱 To create the path around the outside of my beds, I hammered gravel board attached to wooden posts into the ground so that it was protruding about 1-2 inches and laid weed membrane between the gravel board. I then used gravel from @allgreen (previously gifted) to create the path surface. 🌱 This robust path acts a great barrier to prevent weeds and grass from encroaching on my beds. 🌱 Flowers I’m growing: sweet peas, poppies, ammi, gypsophila, dahlias, sunflowers, strawflowers. #selfsufficient #gyo #growyourown #growyourownfood #homestead #smallholding #garden #lovegardening #kitchengarden #veggarden #plants #igrewthis #ediblegarden #gardendesign #spreadsheets
