Yeah there's really no point in having rods unless you're going to mount a matte box or follow focus. Your new setup looks much better for run-and-gun kind of stuff.

I use this for my R5C and love it. My cam has battery issues, so I run a v-mount on every shoot and this solution has worked amazing.

Can you still comfortably use your shoulder as a third contact point? I've got your original setup with even longer rods and I constantly have Vmount in my shoulder to add a bit of stability.

Pro tip: if you already have a v-mount plate for the rods you can rig it to a cheese plate as a base and an arca quick release and save about 60 bucks + it is more solid than the smallrig (mine after a while started wobbling)
