Fortunately, if you are bitten, 99.99% survive. Here is what you can do to minimze the suffering (Missouri State Medical Association states): Pre-Hospital 1-Prioritize scene safety 2-Obtain pictures of the culprit snake if possible 3-Remove tight clothing or jewelry proximal to the bite 4-Do not apply a tourniquet or ice 5-Do not use a suction device At the Emergency Department. 1-Obtain intravenous access 2-Obtain plain radiographs of the affected part to rule out underlying fracture or retained radiopaque foreign body 3-Consider drawing basic laboratory tests: complete blood count, coagulation studies, and fibrinogen. 4-Control pain with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, with the addition of opioids if required 5-Obtain expert consultation (with a medical toxicologist or local poison control center) to discuss administration of FabAV and potential transfer to a tertiary care center #pitviper #pitvipers #snakefieldguide #snakebite #snakesafety #hikingsafety #snakencounter #survivaltips #survivalhacks #survivalskills #greatoutdoors #hikingadventures #venomoussnake
