@_grantritchie: A much harder decision than it used to be. Choosing between a road and a gravel bike is well, challenging. When I got my first road bike, gravel wasn't a thing, and 'all road' definitely wasn't a thing. Both disciplines are a lot of fun, and unique in their own right, which is why I do both. But is an 'all road' bike the right answer, l'm not sure... And the question of whether it's better to buy a road or a gravel bike is not a simple answer. But hopefully if you're in this position currently then this video goes some way to helping make a decision. And if you've recently made this decision, or have some good advice then please chime in on the comments.

It’s definitely a tough choice! Both bikes have their unique appeal. I love how versatile an all-road bike can be, but it really depends on what kind of riding you’re into most.

What about gears? I’m thinking about buying my first gravel bike - is it better for a beginner to go for 2x or 3x?

I sold my canyon Grizl for a Specialized Roubaix (All-Road/Endurance bike) 25/28mm for road, 32mm for bike packing and 40mm for gravel

The question about is a gravel bike with a set of good road wheels a good road bike depends entirely where you want to get to. I can hold my own with a standard club group. Never going to jump to the next level at my age. So for me having the one bike with two sets of wheels is perfect. If I was 30 years younger and looking at progression, that’s a whole different conversation. I have the money now to get different bikes, just not the legs to justify it.

I’m looking at getting into triathlons. I live in Manchester (where the roads are crap), I currently have a road bike but I’m eyeing up a gravel bike as I tend to ride down the canal. But I want to be able to go quick on race day. Is a gravel bike with 2 sets of wheels and aero enhancements the right choice?
