You don’t correct a fear-based aggressive dog. If you do, you’re going to make it worse. The point of training is building positive associations.

I used to be very anti-tools until my trainer compared it to giving a toddler snacks everytime they did something you liked but never telling them no or explaining what’s wrong. Snapped out of R+ real fast after that

we don't parent kids with only positive reinforcement, life isnt only positive reinforcement.. this idea that negative consequence is inherently abusive is absurd. negative consequence is part of life for every species .. .

imagine is correction based and positive reinforcement trainers really wanted to work together. I believe there's a time and place for both and certain dogs do better with one vs the other. its such a hard industry cuz everyone says the other is wrong.

for some dogs! this isn't a blanket thing! my dog responds better to positive reinforcement than correction (we've given both a fair shot). When I switched to positive only for him, his progress was faster and actually lasted. but my other dog is the complete opposite he responds best to correction. we as a community need to remember the dogs tell us what works best for them, not every dog thrives with one specific training style

is flooding a good idea for a fearful dog? my dog is afraid of so many things outside to the point where she’s dragging me away from whatever she thinks is scary. at this point i feel she may have to be forced to be around these things to realize they’re not scary, but it could be counter productive:/ i’m stumped

Trainers that use those tools to TRAIN and not REINFORCE are trainers that have clients that go to other trainers because their dog goes back to the way it was a few days later

Under threshold, yes. Distracting, no. Distracting is just management when we’re not in an active learning scenario. But keeping a dog under threshold with intentional set ups does in fact work😅

what would be best for a dog who's mainly reactive out of anxiety, but it looks like aggression. I've had her sit and just look at what it was and I can see the anxiety leave her, she'll get bored and move on. this isn't applicable to every situation though and sometimes it's just not enough. She's stressed by it and stimulated at the same time.

Whats your opinion about pack order training? I have a reactive 3 year old Boerboel. He’s bitten me and one other person in the home. Im weighing my training options and I’ve heard some valid criticism about pack order training and more aggressive methods.
