I try to understand why my mom is so dependent on religion. Maybe it’s cause she grew up in poverty or struggle so now she has unhealed trauma that translates to restless anxiety through religion

I told my mom something similar. I deconstructed because I grew up in a stable home and life, so fundamentalist Christianity was just another set of rules I didn't need. Her childhood was chaos; I get why she clung to it for so long.

This is why religion cannot influence government. If a religious organization benefits when people are in distress, they are going to lobby the government to cause more distress in our society. Or at the very least, hinder any progress toward a better world.
