I'm not a roofer but shingles are much harder to cut nowadays, I used cutoff wheel 4 1/2 inch angle grinder

fuck eh, times have changed, im throwing the knife away. I cut all my starters right through a full bundle with a 7 1/4 skill saw, one bundle gets cut @ 16" and the other bundle @ 8" there's all your starters in the matter of 1 min.

this is how everyone at my job cuts shingles, it really is the perfect cut, we just use the side of our normal wood blades
