@thirdofficerguide: Part 1 - What you need to learn about the ECDIS.  The truth is, when i was a third officer, I had no DAMN idea what these functions of the ECDIS were. I thought they were for 2nd officers. I was wrong and I learned it the hard way.  It was my first vessel as a 3rd mate.  We were arriving at a busy port when the ECDIS froze and the captain quickly asked me to restart it, which I did.  The ECDIS switched on but it was blank. There is no route, no user charts, no AIS etc. so the captain asked me to set it up as he was busy with the traffic.   A few minutes passed by and I still had not set up correctly.  You can already figure out what happened next.  The captain bursted into anger🤬.  "Go back to being a cadet ! ! " I froze. Heart pounding. That moment haunted me for weeks. So if you don’t want to feel that kind of shame, get a pen and paper and start learning these functions.
