A Central Florida nonprofit that serves thousands of people who are experiencing homelessness says it is losing so much money it may end up shutting down. Matthew's Hope Ministries is sharing an urgent plea for help. The nonprofit's founder and CEO, Scott Billue, said the average donation rate is about 60 percent less than what it used to be since the COVID-19 pandemic. "There's no more money, there's just no more money," Billue said. "So, we're not going to be able to purchase any food, clothing or hygiene." The group solely relies on community donations to serve people in need. "Just this past Monday, we learned that we're losing about $25,000 a month per location, starting immediately," Billue said. The group recently lost one of its biggest donors, which means the locations in Brevard and Orange counties will have to come up with $50,000 a month. "The sad news is, ultimately, it could shut us down," Billue said. "We're trying to be very proactive, so instead of just running full steam ahead in hopes it gets better, starting this next week, we are cutting back certain programs, and we're cutting back the amount of everything we do." About 1,000 people come to Matthew's Hope per week for services like medical care, mental health, hygiene and food. Billue said they have had to use their operational funds just to buy food and supplies, but with money running out, it may mean staff cuts. "We're seeing a very heightened level of anxiety from the homeless that we serve," Billue said. "80 to 85 percent of these people are homegrown. They came from the community they're being served in, you can't give what you don't have."
