A pharmacist named Lunsford Richardson made a mentholated rub to help his sick son breathe better. He first called it Richardson’s Croup and Pneumonia Cure Salve. Later, he changed the name to Vicks to honor his brother-in-law, Dr. Joshua Vick. By 1912, it was called VapoRub. In 1918, during the Spanish flu, it became one of the most trusted home remedies. Sales grew from 900,000 dollars to 2.9 million in just one year. In the 1950s, Vicks arrived in the Philippines. Families used it during colds, coughs, or after taking a bath. In the 1980s, Procter and Gamble bought the brand. Even the famous Malabon Candy Company made menthol candy inspired by Vicks. We remember the scent. We remember the care.
