is there not a minimum amount you have to earn in the states before you get taxed. In the UK I'm sure you have to earn something like £12500 a year before you get taxed and you only get taxed on what you earn above this amount.

Tell her just wait till you get 12 hours of overtime and you think it's gonna be an amazing paycheck, but it throws you into the next tax bracket and you actually make $12 less than your normal 40 hour paycheck. FML.

in the uk you make over 12k I think before you start being taxed and then it's only on what you make over that.

As a student in Belgium you just pay 2,71% for social security. Student pay no taxes (except if we work to much hours and/or earn to much)
