Been a Network Engineer for 30yrs and manage a team of 40 engineers. To those just starting out, learn python, ansible and programming fundamentals along with the network basics. Things like ACI, SDWAN and alike are much easier if you can script.

Cause networking is now largely being bundled into other major professions. They often aren’t looking for a networker anymore, they’re looking for a cloud pro who can do networking. Also, one piece of software can take multiple programmers, but one networker can handle multiple networks. The demand just isn’t there as much, and working remotely is huge, which programmers can often easily get. Career decisions are being made properly imo. I’ve had to pivot away from networking, security, and telephony - can’t find the jobs. 😞

I would agree if “networking” wasn’t really a Cisco ad

If you went to my school, you know for a fact that most students fail the networking class mainly because in 2025 subnetting is still a requirement to be done in your head, with AI and subnet calculators its the reason students dont care anymore for it.

Network infra is a commodity. Like, dunno, electricity or plumbing. Do we need it? Oh yes. Is it cool? Meh. Not really.

Because network engineering is easy. It’s logic and that’s it. AI can build on it full network designs and provide the code to deploy it.
