You should never put tiles on the steps. Remember that they support weight and constant movement, either from the door or people's footsteps, and the probability of leaks is high

I usually put the schluter under the top tiles but that look nice

I always put my vertical tiles on top of horizontal. Walls run on top of the floors. I never use tiles for steps or bottom of niches. Solid pieces only.
