I'm an audiologist who signs with my deaf patients and I've been teaching my 10-month-old sign since birth. she has about five words she signs consistently even if they are a little chaotic and I plan to continue it. it's very helpful for a lot of things, not just for her to know another language but talking at a distance, speaking in private, etc. teaching her dad too

Baby signing is amazing! They are just brimming with ideas and it’s given them such a chance to tell us! I love teaching asl signs to babies!

I have an AA in sign language, my 16 month old can sign over 15 signs and has been for months already and is just now starting to be able to vocalize what he wants (not always understandable) I plan on teaching him enough to have conversations fully in sign and ASL when he’s older! He communicates so much just from his sign language!

I taught my youngest some baby signs before he could talk because he'd get so frustrated when I couldn't understand him. Milk, potty, sleep, hungry, more, drink. Those few signs saved our sanity until he could talk.

My daughter learned how to ask for milk when she was hungry at 6 months old. We’re both hearing but her ability to sign helped us communicate so much earlier!

My daughter started with baby sign language and we’ve continued learning from deaf creators ever since. She has ADHD and sign language communication helps so much with having her focus on what’s being said. Her attention drifts far less. You’re one of her favorite creators and we’ve learned so much from watching you. Thank you!

Please remember that there's no such thing as "baby sign language" or "Baby ASL". That would be like saying that there's "baby English". The signs taught to infants & toddlers are (or should be) the exact same signs used by fluent ASL users. The children may not repeat them perfectly, just like a child learning to speak English will often mispronounce words, or make approximations. The same thing happens with sign language. That doesn't mean that we need to change the sign to make it easier for the child. We don't change words in English to make them easier for children learning to speak English.

I learned some basic ASL as a baby! I had delayed speech and a speech therapist taught me some ASL!

Fun fact, we started all of our children with learning baby sign language and then our second daughter was deaf. Nice early start.
