It’s not that they don’t know the difference between ethnicity and nationality. Jamaicans born and raised in Jamaica experiences are vastly different from the experiance of those in the diaspora. We tend to hold that experience close to our hearts because it can’t be understood, but lived which is why they are so protective of it and are quick to tell people if they’re Jamaicans are not. I know this because I experienced that need to protect my identity when I met a lot of American Jamaicans when I moved to the states at almost 16. They just need to be more open to the diversity of the Jamaican experiences.
