@3dauto_aylmer: Replying to @jeffcompton7 It's a long winded rambling so bear with me. Are the regulations too light for things like tires and brakes? Should they be changed? #mto #driveon #safety #regulations #timeforachange

That was my point. If you hadn’t broken the tires down and seen how bad they were, you would have passed it. But knowing what I know and how long I’ve been in the trade they don’t pass to begin with. Not maybe. Yes we should have an inspection every 2 years. Regulations are a general guideline.

There should be a MTO inspection Lane somewhere and let them call it and take liability !

Maybe a Red Seal tech should be mobile and be available to come in to a shop and put a second opinion on record .

Brakes and tires for sure! I look at it as that inspection certificate is valid for 36 days, the condition of the vehicle needs to be good for at least that amount of time. Barely on the edge doesn’t cut it.

Your right regulations is minimum requirements but it’s always been up to the the tech signing the safety. My bar for safety is higher than minimum. As well I feel the bare minimum once you signed a safety that vehicle should still pass the safety by any tech 90 days later. Just like how our repairs need to me warrantied for 90 days or 5000km as per consumer protection act. Like i said bare minimum. A vehicle should pass a safety at any inspection. When im asked by a customer is it safe to drive? When I called some worn out parts. I always say it would fail a safety inspection. I still agree with anual safeties as you keep saying.

I had a situation today. The sister shop said the chip was filled so it should pass. It’s a 2023 bronco with 18000km and sold for $52000. I said don’t care what the regulations say, it fails. I know the consumer will get the ministry involved if I let it go. That my reputation and a red star beside my name to the mto.

Rules are needed for protecting the customers from being ripped off. But we always have the right to deem save or not.

On the commercial side there actually a card board card you set at the cracks a you check weather /age cracks . I fully agree with you on commercial side if you can look at MTO on cracks in the windshield where a road side inspection wouldn’t pass

Not a Tech, but work on my own stuff. Other Countries Japan as example, they have an Inspection every 2 Year I think, but they also do the inspection them selfs, so they have facilities that only do them. Makes the process simple and when police have doubts they just send then there.

This is why we now have cameras in the safety. Because some guys pass anything if they see it at all!!

So rules only apply to auto tech what if the opp did the same thing make their own rule as they see it So I have have been a tech for 35 years so if it meets minimum then it must pass
