there's a lot of things to unpack from this scene, I understand the mother's action honestly, sure a mother would love her child no matter what happens but could she have lived with the fact that her son killed someone? killed a mother? Maybe, we don't know because she couldn't even live with the fact that she killed her own son. Some people couldn't handle the fact that she killed her son to save someone she just met but truthfully, in that scenario, having gone through so much can you even keep yourself from going insane? Same goes to the son if you're someone who's afraid of death you yourself would have done everything to keep yourself alive as diabolical and straight out insane the things you had to do, you would.
