For AI models to reason, I truly believe we need to go back to the drawing board. I struggle to believe our current models can genuinely think. But who knows, OpenAI are generally close source so perhaps they’re making something mind blowing

For linear regression you just need the residuals to be normal iid

Why are we so fixated on reasoning? We can reason. Let’s use LLMs to become better at reasoning

fun fact is LLM struggle to answer easy questions (8 disk Tower of Hanoi) even with PB of data!! isn't that weird? we can do better even with much more less data

The one by Apple is incredibly biased from what I’ve heard. I haven’t actually read it, but the limits that they conclude as an inability to reason seem to actually be due to the strict token limit they imposed and the fact that it didn’t let the models use code, but if the limit is increased and code is used (as shown by other studies) the results are vastly different pointing to the ability to reason. The bias and conflict of interest I’m referring to comes from Apple’s poor performance in the AI marketplace, so it makes sense that they’d publish papers denouncing the ability of LLMs and other reasoning models as a whole. To respond to your point specifically, this would mean that ChatGPT models, which can use code and have a high token limit, may actually have the ability to reason.

LLM is not the same thing as AI and yet the two have become synonymous. Of course an LLM can’t reason, it can only retrieve data like a database

On Illusion of thinking: the paper doesn’t prove LRMs/LLMs can’t reason at all, but it does show that current incarnations break down sharply when complexity exceeds certain thresholds, suggesting these models aren’t simply scaling like digital mathematicians (they overthink easy problems and fall apart with hard ones). The opportunity still exists to improve these models, net it’s not so much a can’t, more like not yet.

I'm not sure about the interpretation of the reasoning paper, I'm not in favor of the big AI hype, but interacting with reasoning models makes me wonder if thinking really is needed, or that if they can't think maybe we can't either

I don’t understand why researchers are so into kneecapping the AI by removing its ability to write+execute code, then claiming it “can’t reason”. how is that productive?
