@tripimprover: Homer may be the most famous Greek poet, but Hesiod was probably the first. Inspired by the nine muses, he wrote about the origins and genealogy of the Greek Gods, and he is captured here repeatedly by Gustave Moreau (1826-1898). I have just start reading his Theogony and Works and Days, two short books Hesiod wrote in the 8th-century BC. If you are interested in Greek mythology, this book may actually be a good start to understand mythology from its origin.
