Otto Warmbier was a 21-year-old American student from Ohio who travelled to North Korea in late December 2015 as part of a guided tour. The trip, run by a foreign travel company, took the group to various cultural and political sites in Pyongyang. On January 1st, 2016, just before leaving the country, Otto was stopped at Pyongyang International Airport by North Korean officials. Authorities accused him of attempting to take down a propaganda poster from a staff-only area of his hotel — something they claimed was a crime against the state. Otto was formally arrested and appeared in a televised press conference, where he gave a statement authorities said was a confession. In March 2016, following a short trial, he was sentenced to 15 years of hard labour. The U.S. government and his family disputed the fairness of the trial and the conditions of his detention. For the next 17 months, Otto remained in North Korean custody, with little information released about his condition. In June 2017, North Korea announced he was being freed “on humanitarian grounds.” When he arrived back in the United States, he was in an unresponsive state. Doctors said he had suffered severe brain damage, but the exact cause was unclear. Otto passed away six days later, on June 19th, 2017, surrounded by his family in Ohio. His death sparked international outrage and heightened tensions between the U.S. and North Korea, with calls for justice and accountability for how he was treated during his detention. #horrortok #truecrime #ottowarmbier #fyp
