Molly Ticehurst was 28. A mum. A childcare worker. From Forbes, NSW. Her ex was out on bail — charged with raping her, stalking her, destroying her property. She still died. He was released anyway. By a court registrar. On a weekend. With no electronic monitoring. On April 22, 2024, her body was found at home. She was the 25th woman allegedly murdered in Australia that year. What changed after Molly died: → Serious DV offenders must now show cause why they deserve bail → Registrars can no longer make bail decisions — only magistrates → Accused DV offenders on bail must wear ankle monitors → Prosecutors can delay bail release while they appeal → Coercive control became a criminal offence in NSW (July 2024) Progress? Yes. Long overdue? Absolutely. But here’s what I can’t stop thinking about. Molly had to fight to be believed. She had to fight for an AVO. She had to fight to be seen as a victim. Meanwhile — no one questioned him. No one made him prove he was safe. No one monitored him. No one made him justify his freedom. The entire system was designed around managing her fear instead of stopping his behaviour. That is the real conversation we need to be having. Women shouldn’t have to die for laws to change.
