@elaina.rivers: Shuji Nakamura (中村 修二), born in japan, earned a degree in electronic engineering from the University of Tokushima in 1977. He began employment at Nichia, a small chemical company with limited resources. His co-workers and superiors doubted his work and even suggested that he quit. Unfazed, he set out to develop the elusive blue LED—a challenge that industry leaders Sony, Panasonic, and Toshiba were not able to solve. Nakamura traveled to Florida, where he spent nearly a year building his own MOCVD reactor. Despite being taunted by laboratory peers and being called merely a technician, he continued. Scientists at the time had concluded the most suitable materials for the development of blue LEDs were zinc selenide and gallium nitride. Nakamura had chosen to research gallium nitride, which was later declared useless. Regardless, Nakamura continued to work from 7 AM to 7 PM every day for years on end. In 1993, he accomplished what other people said was impossible: the first viable blue LED and in 2014. The invention brought immense wealth to Nichia, but Nakamura was never fairly compensated for his contribution.
