She’s right. You could put 10,000 hours into dating and end up worse off by being traumatized. But if you put 10,000 hours into anything else - cooking, reading, school, a career, working out etc. you’ll be better off than when you started.

The language of the show, "You are now single and vulnerable" is so insidious.

I stopped calling them situationships - it’s a relationship even if it’s a short one. People need to stop letting each other off the hook, with no sense of responsibility.

It’s the PHONES! It’s social media. Even if you aren’t on dating apps, social media has become default dating apps so you’re forced to play a game.

For women on dating apps, there isn’t even the illusion of endless options. There are almost no options. When I was on the apps, I could scroll through the entire stack and swipe right on maybe 3 guys. There are no options on apps.

To me reality tv is literally just a sociology study

A lot of the current love island cast are in the age bracket where quarantine would have overlapped with their high school/college developmental years

I think dating apps ruined relationships by giving ppl the veneer of continuous options, of being more attractive than they really are, and gamified relationships so they can’t nurture relationships

I hate how we always center men in conversations about the loneliness epidemic

what's crazy is that almost none of the islanders have ever had real relationships. most said that they've never really dated or been in love. they have NO experience making deep romantic connections with others

I think we also have to acknowledge that we are living in a time where there aren’t many benefits to being with man due to a number of things, but one big one is women’s autonomy.

The producers of love island came out and said they actually had trouble finding male contestants lol not because men weren’t signing up but because of their behaviours and morals

everyone is like playing “the game,” and it makes dating so hard. like i am made for deep, meaningful connections/relationships, and it’s like impossible to find that right now

It’s the phones. Technology is taking away people’s ability to be personable and form real life relationships. Too much access to everything.

It’s not only in America. It’s also here in South Africa. So I will assume we have a dating market crises globally

it 100% is phones and social media. Our dopamine is fried, so we don’t crave romantic connection anymore. social media and dating apps also give the illusion of endless choice, so people don’t want to commit and work on building a relationship.

Dating, as we know it right now, is so new as a concept and relied so heavily on gender norms for success. It was bound to evolve for good or for bad 👀

A lot of these beautiful 24-27 year contestants haven’t even been in what they consider a relationship but admit to being “involved” with people for years … it’s a weird thing I’ve noticed with my brother in the same age group there is this fear of labeling anything as a relationship or even dating. They will go on dates and be intimate for weeks, months etc but it’s so easy now to dispose of anyone and it’s ok bc you’re “not dating” and it’s all “casual”
