@official_history_daily: In a rare 1969 interview with the press, Nigeria’s Head of State, Major-General Yakubu Gowon provided a revealing insight into one of the war-time decisions made during the Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970). When asked why Nigerian soldiers were not being awarded medals for their efforts during the conflict, Gowon responded: "You know, to give medals in a civil war, you’ll find that it will make (the opponent) feel as though he's a 'conquered' sort of person." His answer reflected the sensitive nature of the war, a conflict between fellow Nigerians and the federal government's broader goal of "No Victor, No Vanquished", a principle Gowon would formally adopt after the war to foster national unity and reconciliation. By withholding military honors during active combat, Gowon sought to avoid deepening the psychological divide between the Federal side and Biafran forces, preferring instead a post-war focus on reconstruction, reintegration, and healing. Gowon was a magnanimous Commander in Chief. God made him the man in charge at that material time to prevent the complete annihilation of the Igbos. It is sad to see how he’s so hated today.

We might not like to hear it but the English we spoke then was a copy cat of our then colonial masters, unlike now, we've grown confident enough to reflect our culture even in our spoken English; a small sign of freedom if you ask me.

Gowon reneged on implementing the Aburi Accord which he initially agreed to in Ghana. What did he expect? He caused the Civil War.
