@geckoemmy: Replying to @Marty’sMama🇨🇦 Why doesn't Jake, the African grey parrot, fly away? His flight muscles have shrunk to the point that they are basically useless. But you should never take a bird's lack of an ability to fly for granted - Jake's situation is unique and has proven fully limiting. Accidents can happen quickly. Birds who are not flight trained with full recall should not be allowed outdoors without proper restraint like a suitable travel cage or correct safety restraint such as an Aviator Harness. If you want to learn more about flight training, @fidsoffreedom and @zippthecaique are two of my favorite free-flying accounts #rescueparrot #petbirds #parrotflight
Even if Jake could fly why would he ever wanna leave.

Do you worry about him flying away? No. Do you worry about him smacking the shit out of your head with his wings while he’s chilling on your shoulder? Probably 😂

Do you think one day he will be able to learn to? Once he gains enough muscle?

Could that be why people "help" older birds to fly? I've seen people in videos where they hold the parrots feet and the parrots open and flap their wings as the person runs around a bit.

If none of them are clipped, do you only take outside the birds you know can’t fly off? Always wondered!

unrelated question, but are you nervous to preen (the feather thing) cockatiels or smaller birds? I recently got a cockatiel that likes head scratches but I'm too nervous to properly preen her. She's so small it makes me nervous

my cockatiel was like this. he could fly a little but not as acrobatic and graceful as the cockatiels at the zoo. it was more like a chicken fumbling over a fence. I loved him so much

I clip only one parrot and that's for the safety of the other birds. She's my baby but she will try to fight, violently, other birds and even people. She's shown that, if flighted, she'll attack someone. She had bitten two people and bit through the beak of a bird years ago
