Even regular bicycles are considered vehicles, and they are legally allowed on the regular road even without a bike lane, for this exact reason. The speeds are incompatible for safety.

You're probably not in the wrong. In Philly if you're downtown, it's illegal to ride bicycles on the sidewalk for the safety of pedestrians. I think there are similar laws in most major cities.
