@adjacentnode: Router on a stick is one of the first networks anyone learning networking creates. It teaches inter-vlan routing, trunking, and how sub-interfaces work. #networkengineer #networking #it #Tech #stem #ccna
I swear this is the general design for most SMB’s, except that ‘router’ is a NGFW (Next-Gen Firewall) running multiple functions (Gateway, Firewall, Router, VPN Tunnel Gateway, so-on). Speaking from MSP space, but also regarding small environments. Your scaling statement is spot on. Always scope to the business requirements.

The fact I understood like 90% of what u said makes me feel like a genius lol

It sure doesn’t scale well. Especially in a university environment. Make sure you have the word “add” at the end of the command.

so is networking just always software related?

I thought managed switches can act as a trunk without the need for a layer 3 switch

the very first router I played with was a mikrotik routerboard 800 I think but I kinda remember it being less fancy than that... not only did it connect me to the internet it played the SuperMario song

Chris :
Firewall rules are easier than ACL’s. I feel that is where most network people get configurations wrong. Also there can be a limit to the number of ACLs allowed and are usually not stateful thus requiring two ACL’s. I think router on a stick has its place. Also most firewalls allow you to bond or LAG two or more interfaces now.

I got about 20 VLANs and i hate to use the firewallrules on a Switch?! So I use only L2 Functions and let my Router route… you see any problems?

And u use ACLs then to make sure certain vlans would not communicate to each other

Add the "stick" as an LAG and not as a singe 1 Gig connection. Why not 4x 100 Gigs? Transmit hashed over LACP L2+3 (or if TCP fragmentation is no issue XORed L3+4)? Scales well for a lot things. Not for the top 0.001% enterprises, but for the rest. 🙌🏻

I’m a hobbyist network engineer - ie, left side of the dunning-Krueger curve. What are some examples where I might use the layer 3 routing in my switches?

I built my first network on NetWare 4.1.1. I’m pretty sure VLANs were barely out of the early dev stage at that point. 🤪

you can use port channel to get more than 1 interface between router and switch

“Switchport mode trunk vlan add” I run that command on the DS. Tab is your friend 😂

my uni actually use this, i was an assistant before and this is how the network is setup its fast but when the switch have issue the network is cutoff for all the switches connected to it had to daily look at that switch every time a faculty say they don't have internet its 50/50 chance its the cause😆

I’ve built same thing using openwrt, rpi4 + poe hat, this is the only option if you would like to avoid usb-Ethernet dongle. It works surprisingly well and combine 7 vlan and 3 vpn tunnels. Handle ISP with 500/250 Mbit with sqm peace_of_cake.

Do this for my home. Mikrotik router gets POE on trunk line - even run EOIP from work to another switch in my house. VLANS are fun
