temperature differential happened.. it was sitting near a window and the sun caused the plastic to warp

I feel justified. I've been avoiding the computerized machines for some reason and I dont know why. I didn't like that no pictures showed the inside.. now I understand why 💀

As a product designer, I just know the arguments that took place between engineering and management to hit the lower cost target on this is machine.

I have a my Mum’s 79 Kenmore. All steel. Works perfectly. I take it in for service every year. I have all the feet, bits, cams, accessories. I love it. I will keep it forever.

to be fair, my 1980s viking has a plastic shell but it's construction is much more sturdy

The needle also looks slightly bent forward! I’d try switching out for a new needle?

oh no that needle is also bent, and the needle should no way be that close the ankle. its not worth the work I promise. its been abused or dropped.

I had a really reliable plastic kenmore for over a decade but I took really good care of her and got really lucky. I treated myself and upgraded to an expensive Janome. It does have some computerized parts but it’s got a lot of metal parts and is really well made

dude I found a Kenmore 159 (Sears Diamond Jubilee edition) on facebook marketplace and all I had to do to fix it was oil it up and replace the belt. it works like a dream and it's *solid*.

I hate plastic being used in tools that deserve to be metal

There are modern computerized sewing machines that have metal frames. Just because the sewing machine is computerized does not mean it won’t have a metal frame. The machine you’re working on is at the lower end of the price point spectrum. This is not to say that the older Singers don’t still have a lot of value. Those machines are tanks and they’ll run for more than one lifetime if well cared for. I believe there are some really well-made older Kenmore’s out there from the 70s that are also very high-quality builds.

Ah damn! I’ve been looking at buying myself a new sewing machine and was looking at those « fancy » ones😅 So realistically, what is the best machine for longevity? There’s so many different opinions on TikTok and as a beginner, I’m lost 🥺

Any thoughts on new sewing machines that you do recommend? I’ve worked on industrial machines before and love Juki, but I don’t know how their standard sewing machines hold up. Also, I’m just overwhelmed with the amount of options & don’t know where to begin lol

Hi! You seem super knowledgeable on sewing machines. Quick question (if you don’t mind my asking) what domestic sewing machines do you recommend?

From the angle that you filmed that the needle is bent, you need to replace that needle right away before you do anything else

If she paid more than $20 for a simplicity machine on FB Marketplace, she did get taken for a ride😳

Heck even my entry level Pfaff I bought ten years ago has a plastic shell but if you open it up the frame of the machine is cast aluminum. Some of these manufacturers make me so mad with this. They KNOW how to make a good sewing machine yet they actively choose not to!
