It is responsible for every movement, every change in motion, and every interaction between objects in the universe. Whether a person pushes a door, a bird flies through the sky, a car accelerates on a highway, or the Earth revolves around the Sun, forces are involved. Without force, nothing would move, stop, or change direction. Understanding force helps us explain how the physical world works and allows scientists and engineers to create new technologies that improve our daily lives. In physics, a force is defined as a push or a pull acting on an object. When a force is applied to an object, it can cause the object to start moving, stop moving, speed up, slow down, change direction, or even change its shape. Force is a vector quantity, which means it has both magnitude and direction. This is different from scalar quantities, such as mass or temperature, which only have magnitude. Because direction is important, two forces of equal strength acting in opposite directions can cancel each other out. The standard unit of force in the International System of Units (SI) is the newton, abbreviated as N. One newton is the force required to accelerate an object with a mass of one kilogram by one meter per second squared. This definition is based on Newton’s Second Law of Motion, one of the most important laws in classical mechanics. Forces can be divided into two main categories: contact forces and non-contact forces. Contact forces occur when two objects physically touch each other. Examples include friction, tension, air resistance, spring force, and the normal force. Friction is the force that opposes motion between two surfaces in contact. It prevents us from slipping while walking and allows vehicles to move safely on roads. Tension is the force transmitted through a rope, cable, or string when it is pulled tight. The normal force is the support force exerted by a surface on an object resting upon it. Spring force occurs when a spring is compressed or stretched and tries to return to its original shape.
