Imagine how it was for us millennials growing up in the 80s and 90s 😅. We craved representation so badly my whole family (including parents) were soo excited to see Apu from the simpsons and the white guy in brown face in Short Circuit on the screen.

I think perhaps we might be looking at representation backwards. I believe that representation is more of an emergent quality of a celebrity. Meaning that person becomes a celebrity and also happens to be representational. Not the other way around. So to say that someone is not entirely representative of a particular culture may be looking at it from an upside down lens. Achieving celebrity status is a rare occurrence so we must treat that as its own quality and then add the layer of representation of it fits.
