You get the work because you must be good and reasonable. Some professional services orgs think high fees make you better, they don’t and you’re earning that money because you’re reasonable.

Fees are a difficult one as many one man bands work for peanuts. Your fees are about average. But architectural work as a whole is very underpaid in 2025.

is feasibility design the same as planning app drawings ? I'm paying someone £1800 for survey and planning app drawings, then £3000 for regs drawings on a bungalow conversion. Is that reasonable?

I’m a freelance architectural technologist and have a similar set up ( main work from architects) and my own jobs. I think your fees are realistic, I dont think people appreciate the time and knowledge that goes into producing drawing packages and seeing a project through to completion. Great website!!!

I would say they are middling as there a lot of guys and franchise charging so low. Only 10 minutes ago I had a client tell me my £1500 ex vat fee for a small extension was three times as much as a franchise who said £550 all in. Mental

I've always thought about going solo or even just increasing the ammount of side project I pick up. But friendls and former colleagues who do, from the outside, seem to have a very unhealthy work life balance. The impact it has on family life doesn't seem worth it for me.

Personally I would add an extra 2% charge based on your clients build budget on the medium projects upwards (guessing that's anything 6 figure) £300k house design will cost £6000 + previous fees

Doesn’t seem enough. Speaking purely as someone who wanted to be an architect when I was younger, I was put off by the 5 (?) years at university. Given then how qualified you are and how much skill is required, it doesn’t seem fair or at the right rate vs other careers out there….

To be fair it is a lot less than I thought, I’ve had my own businesses and also had an HGV licence were I’ve earned more my GF earns with bonus car allowance mileage allowance meal allowance 110k as a Regional Manager of a Medium company, not knocking you btw genuinely surprised 👍
