@hello.reef.tahiti: Coral bleaching is a phenomenon that occurs when water conditions become unfavorable for zooxanthellae, a type of algae that lives in coral tissues and gives them their bright colors. When water temperatures rise, these algae leave the coral, causing the coral to turn white. This is a major stress response. Although bleached corals are not necessarily dead, the one shown in this video is. If water conditions return to normal soon enough, the zooxanthellae can recolonize the coral. However, if the stressful conditions persist, other types of algae may start to grow on the coral, turning it from white to a brownish color. Coral bleaching doesn’t only affect corals; it impacts the entire surrounding ecosystem.
