My issue is I have hyper fixations that result in many hobbies and tasks that end up being “incomplete” because I can’t focus unless I’m multitasking 😭

PERSONAL ASSISTANT- Please I'm begging for more people with adhd to get into being a PA, the best ones I ever have/had are neurodivergent. You can make 6 figures and get the satisfaction and dopamine hit from many completed side quests everyday and get to do tasks however you want to get them done!

I work in psychiatric care support. My old boss HATED me and tried to get rid of me numerous times. Shortly before she retired, I finally got my ADD diagnosis after having fought for it for several years. My new boss (who is awesome) immediately offered me a new role which, while technically being a demotion, really just meant that I had the same job (and pay) as before, but without almost all of the responsibilities I struggled with. This allowed me to focus my energy on the parts of my job that I love and excel at. I'm still terrified of higher education, but I'm getting less terrified. I'm learning that, instead of trying to succeed in areas where I've literally ALWAYS failed miserably simply because that is the normative expectation, I need to focus my energies on the areas where I tend to succeed.

The quote “Perfection is the Enemy of Progress” was life changing to me as a young adult struggling with ADHD.

I appreciate this. 💜 Most of my life, I’ve been disheartened about finishing side projects. Stopping and starting numerous side projects without completing them doesn’t always feel good. Although it took me a while, getting my diagnosis and using the right tools have helped me reach a point where I pick up less and focus on producing something. It’s not perfect, but at least I’m making progress.

My experience is that people who have never worked in jobs delivering anything to a customer - be it a cup of coffee or a painted wall - lack capability to geg things done.

i have a question for you! is anyone ever truly “neurotypical” or are people just forced to be? but some people can mask it better than others?

That's brilliant advice. As I type, I've literally got three projects on the go at my desk, and I'm punctuating that with the odd TikTok break. I have an insatiable need to push boundaries. But finishing projects that make people metaphorically raise their eyebrows, that attract attention, that's the key to having doors open for you.

I learned long ago that I am incapable of working anywhere I don't have control and I needed to work for myself. Then years later I was diagnosed with AuDHD 🙄 (It still frustrates me how long I lived without knowing)

Heartily agree, and this is good advice for everyone really - working hard to overcome dislike/disengagement/disability isn’t inherently more virtuous than getting good at things that sparkle for each of us.

School failed my ASD/Dyslexia seeing me as not smart, worked in call centres for 20yrs and only just in a position as an analyst and CRM specialist... took me years 😞

I used to have a job wherein when my manager realized I really liked certain parts of it, she would withhold those things and only let me do them “as a reward”. 😑 So many bosses are toxic to their employees.

so I hyperfocus until I get the reward then I'm completely disinterested and looking for the next project. it's like as soon as someone says yes there's no chase and I don't want it!

Man I’m almost 40 and i feel like there just isn’t a job that I’m gonna ever be able to enjoy. And I don’t need to enjoy my job necessarily, because I CAN do jobs I don’t love. I just want a job where getting the job done is the main thing as opposed to all that other side stuff I struggle with.
