@therapistinrecovery: Urges are TEMPORARY but OCD and anxiety makes us feel like we must react URGENTLY to our thoughts and feelings. So when in doubt about what to do, simply wait it out. Okay, it’s not that simple, but hopefully this video helps guide you through the VERY important ocd/anxiety skill of waiting. The longer you can wait, the better the results. Edit to add-if it helps, write the urge down so your brain can let it go! #ocd #anxietyrelief #ocdtok #ocdrecovery #anxietytok #anxietydisorder #anxietyhelp #obsessivecompulsivedisorder #pocd #rocd #contaminationocd #scrupulosityocd #erp #exposureresponseprevention #exposuretherapy #act #acceptanceandcommitmenttherapy #ocdspecialist #ocdtiktok #anxietytiktok #highfunctioninganxiety #codependency #ocdawareness #ocdproblems #ocdlife

I think that delaying is an undervalued step in starting ERP. It still gives practice with sitting with the discomfort and it also can be very helpful in realizing you DO have control.

Great advice!! I keep feeling the need to disclose every single detail of my past mistakes even though I’ve already confessed the core of what happened. I feel like I’m lying if I don’t share those details. It will hurt the other person to know these details. So my days get ruined by feeling guilty about something that happened 4 years ago.

So is it completely abnormal for the discomfort to last for hours or even days? Using hit and run ocd/false memory as an example here, I have gotten stuck in rumination and compulsively checking news updates for days at a time.

What an example of an internal compulsion and how can you avoid those since they are thought based and not external actions

What about OCD where I avoid speaking or answering a question because I know I will later regret what I said and I actually can't speak?

How do I practice this when my issue is ruminating? Like, how to I distract my own brain when it already feels like I'm not in control already?
