Stoicism is not about “none of this matters.” Thats nihilism. Stoicism is about recognizing what’s beyond your control and only worrying about that which you do control.

Stoicism is highly intuitive. And it’s not at all psychologically comforting. It’s about tolerance to discomfort.

Marcus Aurelius was just coping because his life was so hard and out of his control? Literally emperor of the largest empire that had yet existed. I think Nietzsche really needs to chill sometimes.

Stoicism isn’t about suppressing emotion—it’s about facing pain with clarity. Marcus wept, Seneca mourned, Epictetus taught dignity. It’s a coping mechanism, yes—but so is everything. The question isn’t whether we cope, but how. Stoicism just aims to do it wisely. All the criticisms are mere misunderstandings or pushing it to the extreme.

Stoicism is “psychologically comforting”? Holy airball. It’s the opposite.

Stoicism is accepting things for the way they are not the way you want them to be

Did Neitzsche get nihilism mixed up with stoicism? Well I guess determinism is bound to happen.

So… the other option is to bow to religious believe that work in the same way but demand your obedience to people in positions of power with in that religious group… how is that better?

Almost all philosophical schools have valid bits. You don't need anyone to tell you what philosophy is good or bad. Read and then think for yourself. Stoicism can be summed up as "can you do anything about it? if yes then do that, if not then accept it and move forward". Nietzche has a lot of valuable bits. But consider that this dude drove himself crazy, tried to bang his cousin and died of syphilis and ask yourself if this is a dude who held it together. Philosophy is great cause you take the useful bits and chuck out the rest if you want to.

this is an oversimplification of stoicism and a subtle propping up of Nietzsche.

I love Nietzsche, but his life worked out to be pretty miserable. One should be careful how they apply him.

Negative people who feed on reactions, hate stoicism, because they loose the power to manipulate your emotions

Stoicism wouldn’t say that it doesn’t matter, they would say the story you tell yourself about what happened is what matters.

we all cope in different ways what actually matters is if your coping mechanism is serving you in a healthy and growing way that positivity impacts you and others
