We were told for awhile to wait till after 15th of August to plant alfalfa and listened to that for along time but now as long as we aren't in a drought we have had way better luck planting around August 1st it gets more established therefore 1st cut the next spring is like a normal crop.

oats is great. get it off in August then fix ditches, pick rock, cut back fence lines, haul manure and seed winter rye for cow feed next year.
