@korindi7: Never thought TikTok would make me question so many things like....does she have EDS? Is this causing damage? Am I a bad mom for not noticing it sooner? How can I help her? What an I doing wrong?? She has been flexible like this her whole entire life and NEVER complained it hurt. Ever. But that doesn't mean it isn't causing her pain now. And it makes a lot of sense on why she doesn't like to swim, dance or move like she used to. 😭😭 #eds #downsyndrome #specialneedsmom #ehlersdanlossyndrome ##viral
You are not a bad mom! It's a good thing that you posted it, and it put some of these thoughts into your head. THAT MEANS YOUR A GOOD MOM!! You are worried, and that's good.

EDS mama here. Not complaining about hurting is very common with EDS. It’s their normal sadly. Swimming is the best sport for them too. Low impact but with her feet/ankle it could hurt from moving that way. You are a wonderful mama! Keep fighting for your girl

Very possible she’s having severe ligament laxity which is very common with Down syndrome. It seems just like hEDS but is not a collagen disorder.

This also may just be a symptom of the typical hypotonia/joint laxity that comes with down syndrome. If she’s not in PT currently, may be worth a check in to problem solve some joint stabilization strategies and strengthening to support the joints.

My sister and I both have EDS and were both flexible our entire lives. She had more severe pain than I do. I can manage with Ibuprofen. However, if it gives you any peace of mind- neither of us had pain until our 30’s. Also- look at the “Beighton Scale” it will give you some context to if she meets the hyper mobility criteria. A lot of folks with EDS never develop pain at all. ❤️

I think people forget that people can be hypermobile without EDS.

You are not a bad parent for not noticing. Medically complex children are “complex” for a reason. You’re aware now & im sure will seek medical advice if it’s warrented. Not the same, but my daughter crawled weird and I had no idea it was an issue. I just thought it was her way of crawling. Turns out she needed therapy. Don’t blame yourself for things you didn’t know. 🫶🏻

a bad mom wouldn't be asking herself those questions. you are a good one! just research and explain the best you can in a way you know she will get it. that and correcting. all of the time. it's a constant lol i have eds and am an autistic 31yo and i need to remind myself to not let my knees bent the wrong way or not trex my wrists while sleeping cause it hurts after. it may not feel bad, now. but it will cause issues. the best thing is for her to understand fully why you are correcting her constantly. it's for her own good. the best of lucks! lots of love! ♥️

She has DS, which the kiddos have hypermobility and tone issues. Not the same thing as EDS

you are absolutely not a bad mother, not everyone is inclined to know everything and that’s okay, but you’re working on finding your answer and fixing her swimming. i see you on my feed all the time, you are a fantastic mother, i can see how much you care for your daughter. and you’re proving how great of a mother you are by your worry.

You see her everyday. You didn’t notice & didn’t know. Others pointed it out from their experiences. Now you have that knowledge & experience. You’re good 👍
