Off the coast of Baja, a humpback mother cruised calmly as her calf swirled, spun, and ducked beneath her, like a living boomerang orbiting a gentle giant. Humpback calves can gain up to 100 pounds a day while nursing, but that doesn’t stop them from burning energy with endless acrobatics. Play is part of how they learn to navigate their watery world. We approach quietly, let them lead the moment, and never overstay our welcome, because respect is at the heart of every encounter.
