This is good to start playing with a NAS but don't use it to store any critical information. USB is not a reliable connection for an always on storage device.

I started with that setup a few years back, and it works rock solid. For those asking. performance is good. A little slow on very large files, we talking gigabytes, but very usable and solid.

Would this allow me to access files from anywhere (including away from where I set it up)? And would I need to SSH my way into it to access the files? Or does that not work? I've been looking for something like this, and can't find a good option for me to do this.

i got a pi with just kodi installed it shows up on home network and you can copy files etc but if you got a medua player on another device you can stream the movies

I use OWC Mercury Elite Pro Quad RAID Ready (JBOD) 4-Bay Storage Enclosure and 16TB HDDs. Successfully added 10 drives no issues.
