neon indicators are direct connection to AC, no additional circuitry to drive beyond a resistor. less current draw for neon indicators. more resistance on a neon for ESD, overvoltage, transients, etc.

my best uneducated guess for the clock is that it essentially rounds to the nearest 5 seconds so that doctors can tell the accurate time at a quick glance if it needs to be recorded in an emergency

clock is searching for a signal. there's a repeater in an elevator room and more scattered in electrical rooms (if needed) that transmit to the entire building. I was an electronics tech at a hospital for 6 years

My best guess is that all the voltage is run through the neon, so unless the noen bulb has broken there is no way for power to be flowing without the neon lighting up.

the clock makes it easier to get a resp. and heart rate. When it's done moving stop counting then add a zero to it and you got a full minutes worth.

I may not fully be able to explain it but. a Neon bulb doesn't need additional circuitry to function. and can light up with varying levels of voltage. as well as being a resistive load ( not sure how to explain that one further )

Neon creates a load that the LED won’t?

Neon will also tell you if it is AC or DC. With AC, both poles will glow. With DC, just one will glow.

jokes on you, I don't need some special tool to feel if a circuit is live

the strictly mechanical version of those with no lights got banned by the Canadian Navy long ago because they were not reliable enough. the black ones.

someone told me once that the clock second hand sweeping mechanism is for conserving power for longer battery life. still accurate time +/- 10 seconds!
also love my wiggy meter.

I have one of those testers and the brand name is "Wiggy". I get a cheap thrill when I tell someone to reach into my drawers and grab my Wiggy.

If it’s anything similar to watches. It’s just indicating that the battery or power cell is running low on charge. So it does 10 second bursts to get people’s attention like “yo replace my battery”

They use RF to set these unless they go IP. This looks RF and it does that jerky jumpy shyt when it gets a signal from the master clock to change/set the time. They used these in elementary schools and hospitals for so long. IP clocks have taken over the schools.

wiggy!!! I found one of these at our transmitter site. absolutely no one else knew what it is. it doesn't buzz as much as yours does.

best guess is the clock thing Is a low battery indicator: you'll get similar with watches only moving every other second.
makes it obvious you need to change the battery, before it just goes dead.

the clock has a low battery.
if replacing the battery doesn't fix it, it needs to be connected to the network again to update the time.
