And he survived! A man launched himself off the Brooklyn Bridge in New York - while appearing to use his backpack as a sort of parachute - as he plummeted some 278 feet. According to reports, the 44-year-old man jumped off the bridge on Sunday after raising multiple flags atop the famous landmark and removing his clothing. One of the flags was a Kazakh flag, another was a blanket with writing on it. The man was said to have scaled the north tower, on the Manhattan side, around 2.30pm, and despite attempts by NYPD’s Emergency Services Unit, decided to make his own way down. Miraculously, he is said to have survived the fall. The man was rescued by harbour police from the East River and taken to hospital where he is said to be in a stable condition. The bridge’s two suspension towers are roughly 278ft (84m) tall. The incident comes less than a month after a distraught woman was talked off the bridge by NYPD officers.
