@eriksinger513: It's not the actor's fault (part 2) Accents are hard! You don't just throw an actor on a horse or toss her a sword—you give her time and expert guidance. It's almost never the actor's fault when an accent goes wrong. #accents #dialectcoaching #movies #movieaccents #skillacquisition #practicepracticepractice
You are helping people to expect more from actors. More awareness will only help you and us.

Anecdotal but I heard about a big production that got accent coaches for all the leads except the western Asian actor who was just expected to know how to do one because Asian

I have an ear for NY accents and there are SO many shows and movies that feature characters with horrible NY accents. I literally couldn't watch the show Power because it was so bad. Just let people have a neutral accent if they can't do it. Smh

I absolutely agree that actors should be given ample time to work with a coach and practice their accents, but isn’t it a little odd to hire someone for a role with a specific accent without hearing if they can successfully do that accent? Or is the assumption in the world of accent coaching that anyone ought be able to pull off any accent with enough time, prep, and coaching? Because my mom can’t even hear the difference between [ʒ] and [ʃ]. 😆

I’m with you 100%. And some of the shots you chose are interesting because many use digital face replacement (like Black Swan that we did at Look FX). VFX and dialect coaching are both things you notice when it goes wrong and stands out.

Didn't Viggo get hired last minute for Aragorn and have a sword fight his first day on set? Not ideal, but it does happen.

I gotta hear you break down Channing Tatum's Cajun accent. I know he was begging for the role and likely took the time but the result is confusing a lot of viewers. Is it just lack of exposure the accent? or is it just the actor's portrayal?

Pierce Brosnan is Irish, right? Is it the kind of Irish dialect that was the issue?
